A school crossing guard was hospitalized Monday in Bergen County after being struck by an SUV while allowing a pedestrian to cross the street, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Howland Avenue in Paramus, according to Frank S. Scott IV, deputy chief of the borough police department.

The crossing guard was in the middle of Forest Avenue, wearing a safety vest and holding a stop sign when the crash occurred, Scott said.

Scott said the 79-year-old driver told police she did not see the crossing guard when the light turned green, and she turned left from Howland Avenue.

The driver was issued summonses for unsafe operation of a motor vehicle and failure to comply with a school crossing guard’s signal.
