Iread Giulia McPherson’s recent commentary, “US aid cuts are a blow to global education” (Sept. 23), and I could not agree more. Cuts to foreign aid don’t just hurt education but also jeopardize global health, leaving vulnerable mothers in labor without medical care.

Every two minutes, a woman dies from pregnancy complications. Most of these deaths are completely preventable. For example, with U.S. support, Mozambique reduced its maternal death rate from 1 in 160 to 1 in 1,000. That is a dramatic improvement made possible through clinics, trained frontline health workers like midwives and emergency care.

Mozambique is just one example of what happens when the U.S. steps up and foreign aid reaches the people who need it most. From rural clinics to refugee camps, the need is global, and
