California's clean air vehicle decal program, which has allowed solo electric vehicle drivers to use carpool lanes, will end on October 1.

Now drivers must meet occupancy requirements, pay tolls, or risk a ticket.

Katrina Sutton, a board member of the Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association, said this is a big hit for the industry.

"It's going to increase congestion not just for electric vehicle drivers, but for everyone in the community," said Sutton.

Originally, California planned to keep the program until 2027, but the federal government did not extend it, affecting half a million electric vehicle drivers.

"It's very frustrating," said Sutton.

The California Highway Patrol will enforce the change, but in a statement to KCRA 3, the CHP noted, "State law provides a 60-day transition
