The Writers Guild is reminding members that writing for verticals or micro-dramas — t he latest trend that is providing a lifetime to fledging actors and entry-level scribes — is covered by the minimum basic agreement (MBA).

In an Instagram post, the WGA said the current MBA includes “terms for short-form and low budget projects made for the internet that include key protections and negotiable compensation.” If union members are approached to do the work, they can call the guild to confirm coverage.

Micro-dramas are bite-sized episodes that are meant for mobile, vertical viewing. They got their start in China during the pandemic but have expanded to the U.S., where revenues reached $819M in 2024, and are projected to rise to $3.8B by 2030.
