New fines for speeding and tougher penalties for retail thefts are among hundreds of laws taking effect Wednesday in Maryland.

New fines take effect for speeding in Maryland

The new fines for speeding could make drivers rethink their lead foot. Drivers caught driving 12 to 15 mph over the speed limit will receive a $40 fine.

Those caught traveling 16 to 19 mph over the limit will face a fine of $70, and drivers caught speeding 20 to 29 mph over the limit will face a $120 fine.

Speeds 30 mph over the limit will be considered reckless driving, which is associated with jail time and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
