RIVERTON, Ill. (WCIA) -- Multiple fire departments in Sangamon County responded to Riverton Middle School Tuesday morning after smoke and a burning smell were detected inside the Athletic Building.
Riverton Fire and EMS officials posted on Facebook that crews were dispatched at 7:50 a.m. for a report of an automatic smoke alarm going off. Police officers arrived first and reported to dispatch, who relayed to firefighters, that there was smoke and a strong odor of burning coming from the Athletic Building.
At this point, the emergency response was upgraded to reflect a structure fire. Due to the size of the building, Riverton requested help from the Springfield Fire Department. The Dawson and Sherman Fire Protection Districts also responded.
