ST. LOUIS — Authorities on Tuesday charged a man with throwing a chunk of asphalt at a car on Interstate 44 near Arsenal Street, near where several cars were hit with rocks last week.

Joseph Patzius, 51, was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree property damage, and drug possession. He was in custody without bond on Tuesday, according to online records.

A man told police he was driving Monday on I-44 near Arsenal Street when "he heard a noise as though something hit the car," St. Louis police wrote in charging documents.

The man looked up and saw someone up on the side of the highway, police said. So the man turned his car around and "re-drove the same route slowing down when he got to the spot of the noise," documents said. "He saw (Patzius) standing with his arm raised and
