While repeat offenders remain a significant issue that city and county leaders say would hopefully be addressed partly by aspects of South Dakota's new prison, Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County officials are speaking positively about trends in crime and public safety issues they are seeing partway through the year.

Government leaders gathered Sept. 30 for the city's semi-annual public safety briefing about crime statistics so far for 2025. Here's what we know:

Some crime rates holding stable or falling

Mayor Paul TenHaken kicked off the presentation by looking at the violent and property crime rates per 1,000 population, which were respectively 37.02 and 5.69 for 2024.

Both of those figures represented a slight decrease from 2023, as well as the lowest figures since 2020.
