Imelda strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane on Tuesday, as forecasters advised of dangerous seas, strong winds and heavy rain.

Imelda was located about 690 miles (1,115 kilometers) west-southwest of Bermuda as of Tuesday evening. It had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 12 mph (19 kph).

Imelda also flooded parts of the Bahamas on Monday, with New Providence hit hard. More than a dozen public schools on that island and on nearby Grand Bahama and Abaco remained closed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday as it approached the tiny British territory, with newly formed Hurricane Imelda following closely behind.

Flights to and from the islands in the Bahamas were canceled, with airports expected to reopen after weather conditions improve.
