CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — A jury of eight men and four women heard opening statements Tuesday in the murder trial of Sarah Hartsfield .

Prosecutors say the Army veteran and mother of four deliberately killed her fifth husband, Joseph Hartsfield. An autopsy determined he died of complications from toxic insulin exposure in January 2023, according to prosecutors.

Before testimony began, Sarah pleaded not guilty after prosecutors read the indictment charging her with “intentionally and knowingly” causing her husband’s death.

In her opening statements, Chambers County prosecutor Mallory Vargas told jurors that Joseph’s family once admired Sarah, but the couple’s “whirlwind relationship” quickly deteriorated, marked by constant fighting and resentment.
