DES MOINES, Iowa (KWQC) - The Des Moines School Superintendent Ian Roberts, recently arrested by ICE, resigned from the district Tuesday.

The firm representing Roberts said in a letter he is immediately resigning out of concern for the 30,000 students in the district.

“Dr. Roberts does not want to distract the board, educators and staff from focusing on educating DMPS’s students,” the firm said in the letter.

Roberts, who has worked as the Des Moines superintendent for the past two years, faced a noon deadline to prove to the school board that he has legal authority to work in the United States or he faced termination.
