GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — With a federal government shutdown looming, North Carolina officials are warning of wide-ranging impacts — from food assistance delays to hurricane Helene recovery.
State Senator Michael Garrett (D-District 27, Guilford County) says while Social Security and Medicare would continue, other programs and services could be disrupted. “TSA screeners don’t particularly like to work for free just like anyone else,” Garrett said, adding that food and safety inspections would likely cease.
He also raised concerns about reports of possible “mass layoffs across government agencies,” which would be a shift from past shutdowns. That, he says, could directly affect services at Guilford County’s VA hospital.
