CLEVELAND (WJW) - A new law just took effect that could clear the way for the Cleveland Browns to build an enclosed stadium in Brook Park.
This week, a change to Ohio's Modell Law took effect. The law had said pro teams could not leave a stadium supported by taxpayers without giving the city a chance to find a new owner.
Now, the law only restricts teams if they want to move out of state. The dome in Brook Park would be just outside Cleveland city limits.
"I supported the project when we passed it in the budget," said State Senator Jerry Cirino. "I think it's pretty straight forward. It gives the team some flexibility and it protects the state's best interest.
Cirino helped push through the change in the law and he helped lead the fight to get the Browns $600 million in state funding.
