FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - When police respond to a call, they never really know what they’re walking into. What sounds routine can quickly turn violent, especially when it involves domestic violence.
Detective Sergeant Troy Jester with the Fort Wayne Police Department’s (FWPD) domestic violence unit knows this reality all too well.
“I think when you talk about how common they are, I would say that it is daily.” Troy Jester.
Stats provided by the department show that officers have to handle roughly 10,000 domestic violence calls every year.
For Jester, it’s rare to go through an entire shift without answering at least one.
He says no two calls are the same, and while those numbers are staggering, Jester says statistics don’t tell the full story.
