STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Tuesday voted to approve a hike on New York City fares and tolls set to begin next year .
Approved by an 11-0 margin, with two abstentions, the board adopted a slightly modified structure for the increase .
The fare for trains and local buses will go up from $2.90 to $3. On express buses, the current $7 base fare would inch up to $7.25 per trip.
Tolls on bridges and tunnels managed by the MTA will also increase. On crossings like the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, and RFK Bridge, one-way E-ZPass tolls would increase from $6.94 to $7.46.
