A Florida state trooper has tragically passed away following an injury sustained at a college football game.

The officer, Craig Gaines, was working as personal security for Florida A&M University head coach James Colzie during the Rattlers’ game against Florida Atlantic University, when a player accidentally ran into him.

He shook off the blow and continued working, but it was later determined that he suffered a broken leg.

According to a post from the Fraternal Order of Police Florida State Lodge, Gaines died on September 19, having fallen ill while at his home in northern Florida. It’s reported that his condition deteriorated rapidly, and first responders were unable to save him.

He is believed to have died from complications from the leg injury.
