Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt knows as well as anyone — after a decade as an MLB catcher — that it’s impossible to contend with a well-executed safety squeeze.

When the Detroit Tigers’ Zach McKinstry expertly laid down a bunt in the seventh inning, there was no defending it as Riley Greene scored what would be the game-winning run in Detroit’s 2-1 AL Wild Card series Game 1 victory.

“It was the perfect play. We knew it was coming. He laid down an absolutely perfect bunt. If the safety squeeze works, you can’t defend it,” Vogt said after the game. ”We knew it was coming, and it takes a perfect bunt and McKinstry took a cut. It was an absolute perfect bunt."
