NEW YORK (PIX11) – A partial government shutdown is lingering, which would affect services for thousands of New Yorkers.
A government shutdown happens when Congress cannot pass funding bills, which keep federal agencies operating into the next fiscal year. If no agreement is reached before midnight on Tuesday, a partial shutdown will begin on October 1.
Federal offices, federal courts, and even air travel could be affected, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
However, employees and services deemed essential are expected to continue operating as usual. New York employees who staff essential programs are furloughed; those expected to work are not paid until the shutdown ends.
