Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek is no stranger to controversy. In just over two-and-a-half years on the job, she’s drawn fire for a government role she gave her spouse and prompted the ire of the building trades with her pro-union stance.
But the York County native is taking on the fight of her political life, standing her ground against President Donald Trump’s looming order to deploy the National Guard in the streets of Portland.
Speaking on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” on Monday she said there was no reason to send in 200 Guard troops to police a city that is largely quiet.
But Trump who has described the city as “war-ravaged,” in his Tuesday meeting with top U.S. military leaders escalated the rhetoric, comparing Portland to Europe during World War II and lashing out at Kotek.
