SWANSEA, S.C. (WIS) - The Town of Swansea will soon no longer have an active police force after town leaders accepted Police Chief Bill Charlton’s resignation.

Charlton initially submitted his resignation in mid-September, along with the department’s only other officer. However, he later attempted to rescind his resignation , expressing a desire to remain in his role. Despite his change of heart, the council voted to approve his original resignation, citing financial constraints.

As a result, the town will no longer have its own police department after Oct. 5.

“The town has had some major financial issues — obviously they’re worse than anybody thought they were,” said Joel Gordon, an owner of the Kozy Kitchen restaurant in town.
