NEW YORK — Having lost Lucas Giolito for the remainder of the postseason, the Red Sox are leaning toward rookie Connelly Early to start Game 3 of their wild card series with the New York Yankees.

Asked if the Sox had officially made a call for their Game 3 starter, Alex Cora said: “Not yet. We’ll see where we’re at. There’s a good chance it’s Connelly, but we have to take care of the first two games and see where we’re at.”

Early didn’t make his major league debut until Sept. 9 , but has impressed the Red Sox over his first four starts, during which he’s gone 1-2 with a 2.33 ERA. He’s also struck out 29 and walked just four.

Against a tough Yankee lineup in a hitter-friendly ballpark, the Red Sox like the idea of having someone with swing-and-miss capability.
