LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - China is the largest buyer of American soybeans. Earlier this year, President Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese goods; China responded by implementing 20% tariffs on soybean exports. According to the American Soybean Association, the retaliatory tariff has resulted in zero U.S. sales during this crop year.

“The soybean market is almost like the corn market as well, but the soybean market is terrible,” said soybean farmer Brennan Gilkinson.

Brennan Gilkinson has been a soybean farmer in Fayette and Clark counties since graduating from school in 2000.

Gilkinson says other than the 2012 drought, now is the worst point he has been in the business.

“The prices are driven by price and demand. We’d like to say it’s all tariffs. Tariffs has a lot to do with it,” said Gil
