BESSEMER, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Bessemer Board of Education focused on their capital plan for the next five years at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Delays in passing a budget was one of the reasons the school system was subject to state takeover back in 2024.

On Tuesday night, the board voted to pass the proposed plan, which includes $90,000 to try to hire more teachers.

Building improvements are also planned for both the middle and high schools.

Superintendent Michael Turner said the plan is a guideline, and it’s likely some deviations from the plan will be necessary.

“Safety and the welfare of our students ranks number one, that’s our top priority. Then there are some other things on there that are kind of your wish list, like a brand new elementary school,” said Turner.
