CLEVELAND, Ohio — In the shadow of the Columbus Street Bridge at Cleveland's Irishtown Bend, there's soon to be a homecoming, as hundreds of lake sturgeon will make their return to area waters.

The prehistoric fish were once common in Lake Erie, but overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat led to their demise. Thankfully, the river has made a miraculous comeback, and hopefully, so will the sturgeon.

"We're so excited to be hosting the first ever Sturgeon Fest on the banks of the Cuyahoga River," Cleveland Metroparks Director of Natural Resources Jennifer Grieser said. "There have been many steps to get to this point to provide the types of habitat that lake sturgeon and many other types of fish in the Cuyahoga need."
