CLEVELAND — Officials are exploring the possibility of bringing professional open-wheel auto racing back to downtown Cleveland for the first time since 2007, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission confirmed to 3News Tuesday night.

The sports commission confirmed that it is "evaluating [the] opportunity" to stage an IndyCar race in Northeast Ohio.

"The possibility of hosting a major event on the scale of IndyCar presents an exciting opportunity for Northeast Ohio. Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is evaluating this opportunity, as we remain committed to bringing world-class events to our region—events that inspire our community, attract significant visitor spending, and generate meaningful economic impact throughout Greater Cleveland," the GCSC said in a statement.
