INDIANAPOLIS — City leaders are turning their attention to the people with the power to say no to AES's rate increase proposal.

At Tuesday's Administration and Finance Committee meeting, Councilor Michael-Paul Hart (R-District 20) introduced Proposal 287 , which got unanimous support from councilors in a do-pass recommendation.

It comes after AES filed a request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission asking customers for more money earlier this year. In it, the utility wants to increase power bills by $21 for a household using 1,000 kilowatt hours a month.

AES says the rate increase is because of inflation, operational costs and infrastructure upgrades.
