A witness has told a court he believed a prisoner who was allegedly fatally assaulted in a central Queensland jail was being extorted and was attacked because he was an informant.
Benn Schinkel was allegedly assaulted twice in the gym of the Capricornia Correction Centre in October 2022.
The 31-year-old, who was serving time for dangerous driving, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, but died the next day.
More than a year later, two fellow prisoners, Kenneth Leigh James and Leonard James Stanley, were charged with the 31-year-old's murder.
They are also charged with extortion.
The pair faced a committal hearing on Wednesday in the Brisbane Magistrates Court where several witnesses were called to give evidence.
