Leading the U.S. Department of Defense, the “Department of War” as President Donald Trump has taken to calling it, demands intellect, foresight and judgment equal to the power and might of the U.S. military. Pete Hegseth, unfortunately, has demonstrated little of any of those qualities. What he has offered, instead, is a cartoonish fixation on biceps and barbershop standards — an obsession with appearance that reveals a man who is rightfully insecure in his own abilities and unserious about the complex demands of global security.
