* The U.S. government shutdown has begun after President Trump and Congress failed to reach a funding deal by the midnight deadline. * Every federal department and agency has its own set of procedures for operating during a shutdown. Many federal employees will be furloughed, but others may need to show up for work without pay. President Donald Trump has also threatened to impose mass layoffs on federal workers. * Two unions have filed suit against the Trump administration over its plans to fire federal workers during the shutdown, alleging that the “unlawful threats” were contrary to the law and should be declared unlawful by a federal court.
