PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man accused of fatally assaulting another man outside the YMCA of Southern Maine last year is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a plea hearing.

Robert Lancaster is charged with murder in the death of 60-year-old David Hannauer. Lancaster’s hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. in Cumberland County.

The incident happened in January 2024, when police were called to the YMCA on Forest Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. for a report of an assault. Hannauer was found unconscious and seriously injured. He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he died the following afternoon.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled Hannauer’s death a homicide.
