Fake emails are circulating in Marion, impersonating the city’s planning and development department to request payment by wire transfer to process permit applications, according to the city of Marion.

The fraudulent emails may include details such as your name, address, application number and other publicly available information, and may display the city seal or logo, according to a news release from the city.

The city said:

• The city of Marion will never request payment via wire transfer.

• Official city of Marion email addresses end with @marionnc.org only. Any message from another domain is not from the city of Marion. Scammers often use addresses that look official but are not, such as marionplanning.marionnc.org@outlook.com . Note the domain after the @ symbol is not marionnc.
