OAKLAND — A 34-year-old man sitting in a parked van in East Oakland Tuesday night was wounded by a stray bullet fired during a confrontation between other people, authorities said.

The man was in critical but stable condition at a hospital where he was being treated for a wound to his head, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 6400 block of Foothill Boulevard where the man was sitting in a parked van, authorities said.
According to initial reports, police believe a gunfight erupted between other people in the area. Whether they were in vehicles or on the street has not yet been determined, but the shooting activated a gunshot detection alert system, police said.
