A federal government shutdown began at midnight on Oct. 1, and in New Jersey, 22,684 federal employees may be affected.

That was the number of federal civilian employees as of one year ago, according to a recent report from Congress.

In this 15th government shutdown since 1981, both President Donald Trump and Congressional Democrats have blamed each other for failing to reach an agreement to fund the government.

Looming over the fight is the threat of mass layoffs, with Trump saying "vast numbers" of federal workers could be terminated. The White House Office of Management and Budget said in a recent email that workers whose activities are “not consistent with the President’s priorities” are a target.
