The federal government shut down at midnight on Oct. 1 as President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats blamed each other for failing to reach an agreement over funding the government.

During a shutdown, “essential” government workers will be forced to remain on the job without pay while hundreds of thousands of other federal workers are furloughed, which could affect government services.

The federal government employs 52,000 people in Oklahoma, according to state employment numbers.
