Some 25,000 federal workers in South Carolina awoke Oct. 1 to find the government had shut down over the congressional budget impasse.

Not all of those employees are being furloughed and told to stay home, though, only those deemed “non-excepted.”

That means an undetermined number of those in law enforcement, airport screeners, and men and women in military uniform will stay on the job, albeit without a paycheck for the duration.

In-state offices of most of the affected agencies will be closed.

Social Security benefits will continue to be dispersed uninterrupted.

The last shutdown began in 2018 and lasted 35 days. In that instance, a main issue was President Donald Trump wanting Democrats to support $5 billion for a wall on the southern border.
