MARGATE — A city home was evacuated Tuesday morning after a gas line started to leak when utility crews struck it with a backhoe, the city's Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded to 7500 Bayshore Drive at 8:37 a.m. and determined a high-pressure gas line was actively leaking, the department said in a Facebook post.

A 2½-inch hose line was stretched, charged and placed near the leak out of an abundance of caution, the department said.

South Jersey Gas arrived to control and repair the leak. A nearby home was evacuated as a precaution, the department said.

Firefighters stayed on scene until gas company representatives deemed the area safe at 11:08 a.m.
