Tributes have been paid to an “incredible” British volunteer fighter who has been killed on the frontline in Ukraine .

Luke Hinton, 37, was fatally wounded in July by a landmine on the eastern front in Donetsk after storming Russian positions with a unit of Western volunteers.

His platoon specialised in assaulting Russian trenches in teams of four to eight and was part of an international battalion fighting with the Azov brigade – originally formed as a volunteer militia.

A former US marine overseeing the mission he was killed on said the British national from Bristol, whose callsign was “Alfie”, had been in Ukraine for about six months. New Feature
