As the curtain goes up for a new season of Huntsville theater, one familiar face is missing - and missed.

Local theater legend John Miller gave life to some of the most memorable characters to ever grace stages around the Rocket City, from Luke Henry in "The Lion of Winter," to Henry Drummond in "inherit The Wind," to John Proctor in "The Crucible." Fellow actors say Miller was especially proud of the passion be breathed into the character, Captain Hook, in the classic "Peter Pan."

"Just being out there, he could steal a scene - with no problem," recalls fellow actor Sam Marsh.

Despite his booming voice and big presence, Marsh says Miller was never a "look at me" kind of actor.

"He was quick to complement and point out what you'd done right."
