During a government shutdown, "essential" government services like the U.S. Postal Service remain open and functional, while those deemed "non-essential," such as national parks, close or cut funding.

Border crossings between Canada and Vermont have continued to trend to the lowest level they have been in years, but keeping these ports of entry open is considered "essential" for travelers, whether it be for work, tourism, business, or family reasons.
