WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The shutdown of the federal government has begun after Congress failed to reach a funding deal and there's some uncertainty for how services provided to Arizona's Native American communities might be affected.

The Navajo Nation, known as the largest Native American reservation in the country, announced Wednesday that essential services are expected to continue during the shutdown.

The following Navajo programs are projected to continue operating:

Medical services provided through the Indian Health Service

Financial assistance and support for foster care

Public safety services

Road maintenance, bridge repairs and snow removal

Response efforts for wildland fire management

Oil and gas activities

Preparations for the 2027 fiscal year budget
