(WJET/WFXP) – With the start of the NFL season, many fans are rooting for one of Pennsylvania's two teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles. But, what many don't know, is that these teams once united for the 1943 season.

The merger came as a result of the shortage in players during World War II. With many players required to contribute to war efforts, neither team had complete rosters for the 1943 NFL season.

The NFL saw a need for entertainment during the war, and wanted to be able to provide a distraction for the general public. By compiling the remaining players from both teams, the team was given the green light. While officially named the Phil-Pitt Combine, fans were quick to create their own title using the teams' original names. Thus, the "Steagles" were born.
