The US government officially shut down at midnight after Congress and the White House failed to reach an agreement on extending federal funding. This is the first government shutdown since 2018, during Trump’s first term, which lasted 35 days and extended into early 2019, becoming the longest shutdown in history.
Currently, there is no clear path to a resolution, as both sides disagree on how to resolve the issue. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party holds the majority in both chambers of Congress; however, it still requires support from Democrats to pass a bill in the Senate, where a minimum of 60 votes is necessary.
