ROCHESTER, Minn. – The man who savagely assaulted Rochester’s Yammy Bear is going to prison.

Malik Amin Johnson, 47 of Rochester, has been sentenced to up to 11 years and three months behind bars, with credit for 524 days already served.

Johnson pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, great bodily harm, for an attack on April 25, 2024.

Law enforcement says shortly after Johnson was released from prison, he beat Charles Jackson with a tire pump at a halfway house. Jackson suffered a skull fracture and a brain injury which required Jackson to work with physical and occupational therapy staff during his hospital stay.

For years, Jackson has made appearances in and around Rochester as Yammy Bear , performing acts of kindness for children and others.
