Imperial Brands Plc, parent company of Greensboro's ITG Brands LLC, said Wednesday it is closing its plant in Langenhagen, Germany, that is operated by its Reemtsma subsidiary.

The plant began operations in 1971 and has 640 employees. In addition to making traditional cigarettes and fine-cut tobacco, the factory also produces sticks for tobacco-based heated cigarettes.

Imperial said the next step could involve either a sale of the site to a third party or a closure.

The U.K. manufacturer said the plant closing decision "is the result of a careful review of its global manufacturing network in line with the company's recently refreshed strategy for 2026 to 2030."
