Kilauea Volcano began a new eruptive episode early today with lava fountains soaring as high as 330 feet inside Halemaumau crater, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

Episode 34 of the summit eruption began at 12:53 a.m., following two days of gas pistoning events that produced smaller spattering and short overflows. Lava fountains first reappeared late Tuesday night, climbing from about 30 feet to more than 300 feet just after midnight, scientists said.

All activity remains confined to Halemaumau within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and the alert level remains at watch with an orange aviation color code.
