HARTLINE, Wash. — A three-year-old boy in Washington state found a live hand grenade outside his house Monday night.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol's Bomb Squad safely disposed of the grenade found on Willard St. in Hartline.

The boy brought the grenade inside the home before the family called 911, the sheriff's office said. Bomb techs later determined the grenade was live before they removed it to a rural area north of Hartline and disposed of it.

The grenade was a type used during World War II and had been exposed to the elements for some time, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities do not know how the grenade ended up in the family's front yard.
