BRONZEVILLE — Federal agents jumped out of unmarked vans and detained four people outside a Bronzeville shelter Wednesday, according to witnesses.

Agents arrived Wednesday morning at the shelter run by the charitable arm of Bright Star Church and “started chasing people outside,” said Caryl R. West, executive director of Bright Star’s community development program.

“People were afraid, and they didn’t know who they were being chased by, because the agents didn’t identify themselves,” West said. “So they ran into the field, and were chased there.”

Five shelter residents were questioned, including two who presented papers showing they were applying for asylum, West said. But only one of them was released, and the other four were taken away.
