CHICAGO — An Oak Park man charged with assaulting federal officers at the ICE facility in Broadview was scheduled to be released from custody by late Wednesday after a plea for leniency from the man’s suburban mayor.

Paul Ivery, 26, is charged with assaulting a federal officer after prosecutors say he threatened Border Patrol agents during a protest outside the Broadview processing facility and pulled an agent’s helmet while resisting arrest.

Ivery was among 11 people detained during a Saturday evening protest, which also included the arrest of a journalist, at the Broadview facility. Federal agents fired pepper balls and rubber bullets, threw flash grenades and sprayed tear gas at protesters.

Five people, including Ivery, now face federal charges related to that protest.
