UPDATE 10/20/2025 12:00 p.m. ET: Jane Goodall’s cause of death has reportedly been revealed nearly three weeks after her death at age 91.

Goodall died of cardiopulmonary arrest, a.k.a. cardiac arrest, TMZ reported on Monday, October 20, citing her death certificate.

The Jane Goodall Institute confirmed that the conservationist had died in her sleep on October 1.

“The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute has passed away due to natural causes,” the Institute shared in a statement via social media on October 1. “She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States.”
