A Grand Jury declined to indict a man after he allegedly shot and killed a man in a shooting near the Denton Downtown Square Aug. 9, police said.

The Denton Police Department said that officers responded around noon Aug. 9 to the 200 block of W. Hickory Street to multiple reports of a shooting.

Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that the incident started between a man, who was with his family on the Square, and another man, who was experiencing homelessness. Denton police said the disturbance between the two men continued into the 200 block of W. Hickory Street, where the shooter fired multiple times at the homeless man, identified as 61-year-old Jon Ruff.
